L’association DUCTUS – association internationale pour l’étude des inscriptions mineures invite à une réflexion sur les supports des inscriptions mineures et des graffiti figurés. Sur les différents types rencontrés, de la céramique au mobilier métallique en passant par la peinture murale et la pierre, où prend place le graffito? Comment est-il aménagé ? Quelle graphie est-elle choisie ? Le message que donne un titulus pictus ou une estampille rejoint-il celui de l’écriture quotidienne dans son positionnement comme dans le type de support choisi ? A ces questions s’ajouteront celles qui touchent au langage transcrit, qu’il soit sous forme abrégée, codifiée ou qu’il reflète un formulaire, une invective, un trait, un vœu en utilisant des formes dialectales ou grammaticales particulières.

Rome, Rhodes et le Laocoon
Le jeudi 6 décembre 2018, Nathan Badoud (Université de Fribourg) donnera une conférence dans le cadre du Séminaire International d’Histoire Ancienne intitulée : « Rome, Rhodes et le Laocoon ». La conférence aura lieu en salle A329a (bâtiment A) à 18h.
Depuis sa découverte à Rome en 1506, le Laocoon est la plus célèbre de toutes les statues de l’Antiquité. Aujourd’hui encore sa chronologie fait pourtant débat, puisqu’elle fluctue entre le début du IIesiècle av. J.-C. et la fin du Ier siècle apr. J.-C.; ne s’agirait-il d’ailleurs pas, comme on l’a récemment prétendu, d’un faux dû au ciseau Michel-Ange ? Notre enquête nous emmènera jusque dans l’île de Rhodes, et nous révélera la signification insoupçonnée de la statue.

Humanities in the Age of Austerity: A Case Study from UND
I finally submitted my little article on the humanities in the age of austerity that uses the University of North Dakota as a case study. It will appear in a special section in North Dakota Quarterly volume 85.
Many, many people contributed to this article not the least of whom were students in a graduate seminar on historiography who produced a book length response to the de-funding of UND’s graduate program in history and then, some of the same students worked with me to create a class on the UND budget. The undergraduates in that class sharpened my thinking about how budgets worked and how priorities were established. These classroom experiences pushed me to confront a wider range of political perspectives, to read more deeply, and to listen to various participants in high level decision making.
At the same time I was doing this I had the pleasure to serve on UND’s Senate Budget Committee, the Graduate Committee, and to attend various ad hoc gatherings associated with the development of a new strategic plan on campus and various other new initiatives. Whatever modest contribution I made to these committees, I was able to benefit by learning a tremendous amount about administrative attitudes, the views from my colleagues in other departments and programs, and the process of priority setting. While this has been a rather difficult time across campus with people losing their jobs, programs being terminated, and a general sense of anxiety and insecurity, it has also been a particularly intriguing one. Times of instability, it would seem, pushed people to put their cards on the table, to visibly operate the levers of power, and to make statements and take actions that they could otherwise hide behind various gradualist strategies and the slow grind of consensus.
My colleagues on campus and on social media pushed back on various parts of this piece and demanded that I clarify or revise my thinking. In some cases, I did. In other cases, I left the ambiguity as a more honest expression of my thoughts than anything else. Finally, in some cases, I just disagreed or forgot to make changes.
It’s pretty scary to publish something on the humanities and austerity in part because I’ve been thinking about this for a long enough that I no longer can see the issue clearly and, in part, because people much smarter than I am are on both sides of this debate. If the article does anything, I hope it stimulates some more conversation about the impact, goals, and motives of various austerity measures in higher education.

How to Browse What Is Available in the Corpus
Are you curious about what texts are currently available in the Digital Syriac Corpus? This brief tutorial will walk you through the process of browsing the texts.
First, you can navigate to the home page of the Digital Syriac Corpus: syriaccorpus.org. Then, click the “Browse” button at the top of the page:
On the Browse page, you will see the following display, which offers the possibility to toggle the browse results in three categories: Ancient Author, Title, and Syriac Title:
In the default Author display, you will see a list of every single author who is represented in the corpus, including an “anonymous” category for texts that do not have attributed authors.
Next to the name of each author, there is a collapse button (+/-) which, when clicked, will expand to show the list of works associated with that author:
The Title view, seen below, allows federated search results so that the use can sort results by author and catalog (“catalog” here refers to the title of a work that contains smaller constitutive works):
Clicking on a single author or catalog will then limit the results displayed to the right:
And finally, the contents of the Corpus can also be sorted by Syriac titles, which also offers federated sorting options:
Hopefully this brief tutorial has helped orient you to how to search the contents of the Digital Syriac Corpus. Our catalog will expand quickly over the next several months, so this will be a helpful way to stay informed about our collection.

Olympia war eines der bedeutendsten panhellenischen Heiligtümer der griechisch-römischen Antike, das mit den olympischen Sportwettkämpfen alle vier Jahre die gesamte antike Welt zum friedlichen Wettstreit zusammenführte. Die seit 1875 vom Deutschen Archäologischen Institut durchgeführten Grabungen, die als wegweisend für die moderne Archäologie gelten, haben inzwischen fast das gesamte Heiligtum mit seinen zahlreichen repräsentativen Bauten für Kulte und Sport freigelegt. Daraus ergibt sich die Möglichkeit, eine zentrale Kultstätte der Antike nicht nur in ihrer räumlichen Ausdehnung zu studieren, sondern auch ein Bild von der historischen Entwicklung des Ortes zu gewinnen. In den "Olympischen Forschungen" werden einzelne Monumente, Fundgruppen und Grabungsergebnisse, die auf den Berichten der Ausgrabungen in Olympia basieren, in ausführlichen monographischen Untersuchungen vorgelegt. Die Funde und Befunde stammen aus dem Zeitraum von der prähistorischen bis zur frühbyzantinischen Epoche.

Collatinus est une application libre, gratuite et multi-plateforme (Mac, Windows, Ubuntu et Debian GNU/Linux), simple à installer et facile à utiliser.
Collatinus est à la fois un lemmatiseur et un analyseur morphologique de textes latins : il est capable, si on lui donne une forme déclinée ou conjuguée, de trouver quel mot il faudra chercher dans le dictionnaire pour avoir sa traduction dans une autre langue, ses différents sens, et toutes les autres données que fournit habituellement un dictionnaire.
En pratique, il est utile surtout au professeur de latin, qui peut ainsi très rapidement, à partir d’un texte hors-manuel, distribuer à ses élèves un texte inédit avec son aide lexicale. Les élèves s’en servent souvent pour lire plus facilement le latin lorsque leurs connaissances lexicales et morphologiques sont encore insuffisantes.Version complète(9 dictionnaires inclus)Principales fonctionnalités

De lijkkisten van Sesenebenef: een Dodenboek uit het Middenrijk?
Op donderdag 6 december organiseert Egyptologica Vlaanderen in Gent de lezing ‘De lijkkisten van Sesenebenef: een Dodenboek uit het Middenrijk?’. Gastspreker is prof. Harco Willems.
Rond 1900 ontdekten Gautier en Jéquier bij opgravingen in Lisht het graf van de voorleespriester Sesenebenef. Het was een bijzondere vondst, maar doordat alleen de niet erg betrouwbare kopieën door Jéquier gepubliceerd werden, is er nooit veel aandacht aan besteed. Nieuw onderzoek toont niet alleen aan dat de kistdecoratie sterk afwijkt van wat we uit het Middenrijk gewend zijn, maar ook dat de kist inhoudelijk een heel ander ‘verhaal’ vertelt. Een verhaal dat sterk doet denken aan wat later, in het Dodenboek, gemeengoed zal worden.
