Open Access Journal: The Societas Magica Newsletter

The Societas Magica is an organization dedicated tofurthering communication and exchange among scholars interested in thestudy of magic, both in the positive contexts of its expression as anarea of necessary knowledge or religious practice (as in early modernoccultism and contemporary paganism), and in its negative contexts as thesubstance of an accusation or condemnation (as in sorcery trials, andmany philosophical and theological accounts, both early and late). Theinterests of our membership include, but are not limited to, the historyand sociology of magic; theological, and intellectual apprehensions ofmagic; practices and theories of magic; and objects, artifacts and textseither qualified as magical by their creators, or forming the substanceof an accusation of magic by others.

The Societas Magica Newsletter, established by RichardKieckhefer and now edited by David Porreca, is printed twice yearly formembers ofthe Societas Magica.

The editor invites queries fromscholars who would like to propose contributions to the newsletter.Leadarticles are typically 1500 to 2000 words and cover recent research inthehistory of magic and related topics. Smaller pieces for the notes andqueriescolumn are also welcomed; these might include news about dissertationsinprogress or recently completed, manuscript discoveries, or other suchitems. Proposals for articles or notes on topics of potential interestto members ofthe Societas Magica may be sent to David Porreca.
