On Wednesday, March 21, the Illinois Wesleyan Greek and Roman Studies Program will present its first marathon reading of Homer’s epic poem, the Odyssey, in honor of World Poetry Day. The reading, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 2 p.m. in The Ames Library (1 Ames Plaza, Bloomington) and will continue non-stop until about 6 a.m. Breakfast, refreshments, craft projects and more will be provided during the event.
Homer’s epic poem of over 12,000 lines chronicles the 10-year wandering and eventual homecoming of the Greek hero Odysseus after the fall of Troy.
Readers of all ages and backgrounds are invited to participate; no special training is required. Those interested in reading must sign up in advance for a 15-minute time slot to read approximately 250 lines. Readers may sign up for more than one slot. Copies of the epic will be provided in English and several other languages. Students of ancient Greek will read the original.
